Top-up Plans
Top-up plans are additional, separate insurance policies that are usually purchased in addition to the base insurance policies. These top-ups have large insurance coverage for a small premium, but they can be used only if one covers the base hospitalization expense (also called the deductible) either from one's own pocket or from the base health insurance policy.
A top-up health insurance plan, for example, may have a sum insured of ₹50 lakhs with a deductible of ₹5 lakhs. This top-up plan will cover expenses above the initial ₹5 lakh, and up to ₹55 lakhs.
This means that the top-up policy will start covering the expense only when the medical bill exceeds ₹5,00,000 in each hospitalization. Individuals can have another base health insurance policy or pay out of pocket for the initial ₹5 lakh health insurance.
These add-on plans are significantly less expensive than standard base health insurance policies.
